The books of the New Testament tell the story of Jesus Christ and the birth of Christianity from a number of different points of view.   Each book basically tells the same story.   The reader is taken through Christ’s birth, teachings and death, but each is told in a different manner. The book of St. Luke, however, has Mary and her cousin spending three months together, both delighted over their upcoming motherhood.   There is more emotion and bonding shown between family members, rather than suspicion and mistrust.   The book even begins with the story of John the Baptist’s birth and the relationship between their mothers, rather than with mention of Jesus himself.   His paternal parentage is not taken note of until Luke 3:23-38. It is interesting to note when comparing the first two pages of each book, that while Matthew is concerned first and foremost with the paternal lineage, only Mary’s family is noted in the early pages of Luke. It is also important to observe that in Matthew, John the Baptist is rarely mentioned at all, other than his baptizing of Jesus and his death.   Luke, however, places him as a character of much greater importance.   This again shows the greater significance placed on the surrounding relationships and family.   John is the cousin of Jesus and also a miracle of God.   He is conceived (also with divine intervention) by a very old, religious couple in order to be a prophet and pave the way for the birth of His Son. In Matthew, however, there is little implication that the two even know each other well, if at all, before the baptism.   Jesus is the only miracle birth and the central figure of the story.   John is not even mentioned as a person of very great importance except for his interactions with Jesus.   Even after his death, his main talking point seems to be that Jesus is mistaken several times for John the Baptist having returned from the dead. In the description of the Christ’s birth, the differences continue.   While very little is said in Matthew about Jesus’ birth in the barn or the shepherds, the three wise men and their riches, along with the jealousy of Herod, are told in detail.   Once again, the importance of prophecy is brought into play.   â€Å"And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet.†Ã‚   Herod’s slaughter of the children of Bethlehem and the flight of the newborn child and his family make for a colorful and somewhat scary tale. In Luke, rather than wise-men bearing riches and the flight of the new family, there is a much calmer story.   In this version, the tidings are brought by humble shepherds, not rich wise men.   The travels of the new family are done by tradition, not by fear of a murdering tyrant. The difference is emphasized, specifically stating â€Å"And when they had preformed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth.†Ã‚   This is a much different story from Matthew, which reads â€Å"†¦he (Joseph) was afraid to go thither notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee:   And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth (Matthew 2:22-23).† Very little is mentioned of the Christ’s childhood in either story.   Matthew mentions only the baptism by John in which Jesus’ age is not given.   Otherwise, childhood is skipped over completely.   Luke, however, gives brief mention of Jesus at age 12, touching on his seemingly inborn understanding of scripture and man’s relationship to God.   â€Å"And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers (Luke 3:47).† Again, while Matthew appears to have a harsher tone, going straight into the stories of temptation and evil, Luke allows a momentary bit of bliss in the story of a child, separated from his parents and found again in a house of the Lord. One of the most important scenes in Jesus’ life is the story of his temptation by the devil.   This is possibly one of the most important scenes showing the differences between Matthew and Luke.   The first verses can be compared to summarize this easily.   Looking at these two lines: â€Å"Then was Jesus led up of the Sprit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil (Mark 4:1).† â€Å"And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness (Luke 4:1).† In the first telling of this story, Matthew suggests Jesus being hauled out into the woods in order to confront and be tested by Satan.   In the later version, there is a much gentler tone, with the Holy Ghost leading Jesus into the woods after his baptism.   The rest of the tale is much the same, yet just as headlines often set the reader’s mind a certain way for a news article, so this first line can set the reader’s mind to see the same story in a very different light. Many of the same stories do appear in both books, sometimes almost word-for-word.   For instance, many of Jesus’ parables are similar or identical, such as the tale of the husbandmen in the vineyard.   Both tales tell of a man who buys a vineyard, sets it up and then places it in the hands of others to work. In return for work and a place to live, they will provide him with the fruit at harvest.   In both version of the story, these men betray the landowner, injure his servants and kill his son.   They themselves are destroyed in turn, and the land is put in the care of more trustworthy men. Even in these very similar tellings however, there are differences.   In Matthew, the servants, as well as the son are killed, while in Luke they are only injured.   However, the main point of the story remains true in both cases.   The evil men in the story are the men who seek to destroy Jesus’ reputation for their own gain, and in each case, Jesus warns them that they will be destroyed by it. Why are these books so different while telling the same story?   The answer to this is there for the reading in each book.   Different books were written by different men.   One might imagine that Matthew was a traditionalist, studying the Jewish tradition for years and therefore seeing the story of Jesus through his chosen tint. Luke, on the other hand, could easily be imagined as a younger man, less studied in tradition and more moved by the plight of those around him.   It is interesting to note that in many of the stories where there are similarities, the major differences lay in the fact that Luke gives his characters names, while Matthew refers to them only by occupation (â€Å"the fisherman†) or gender (â€Å"a man†). Anyone studying these writings could easily be given a very different vision of what Christ was like, and therefore how Christianity should be followed.   A reader of Matthew might believe that the way to heaven is through absolute adherence to traditional laws and beliefs.   It is likely that it is from Matthew that Christians have developed the belief in absolution as long as they worship God.   It is in this book, after all, that one reads â€Å"All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men (12:31).† Those who prefer Luke’s version might take a less strict outlook and believe that being kind to one’s neighbors and turning the other cheek were the most importance lessons that Jesus had to teach.   Even those who make mistakes can be forgiven, as in the parable of the Prodigal son.   In this story, a son requests and is given his inheritance early by his father.   He then squanders it all, and when a famine comes is broke and starving.   In response â€Å"†¦his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him (15:20).† It is important not to overlook, however, that the book of Saint Luke is not without its more vicious moments as well.   â€Å"Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth?   I tell you, nay; but rather division (Luke 12:51).†Ã‚   Yet, even in these moments, Matthew 10:34 makes Luke look peaceful.   â€Å"Do not think that I have come to bring peace on earth.   I have come to bring not peace, but the sword.† It is due to these different takes on a very complex individual that Christianity has so many branches.   Some may be more forgiving, allowing for the imperfections in human nature and placing more importance on trying to do good for your neighbors.   Others may be more inclined to stress tradition and the letter of the law, so to speak, rather than the spirit.   While these differences may seem small to the outside observer, it is these differences which can often cause conflict.   Even the difference of one sentence can cause for great rifts in any religion.   There is, after all, a major difference between being divided from ones family, and putting them to the sword. Many Americans felt superior to other people in the work because the Christian religion made them morally better than everyone else. Due to that fact, missionaries were sent o these countries so they can covert and adapt to the culture and become more â€Å"American and white† and this led to the boxer rebellion in china. Economically the United States was trying to override the rest of the world. Back then and even today people around the world see the United States as a country with money and a land of opportunities. Industrialization in the late 1800s increased the need to trade with other countries. Nothing was dependent on man but instead... ...t to the climax, which later on they did. Even though most of those territories were lost the U.S still managed to keep the relationship it has with other countries. The United States and the issue of acquiring land overseas was not at all something easy to do. From being a weak nation to becoming more economic, militarily and morally superior whom they did accomplished. Even though this concept of expansionism overseas was displayed as a good thing it was truly a hard task to accomplish. Many other countries were willing to go to war with the United States for the territories but even then the U.S still came out reigning successful. Trade was really the main reason for this, to try and find a new way to have open markets and develop allies with other countries, which ultimately and even still is imperative to have in order to have a lot of income for the country.

Pilgrimage is the name given to a spiritual journey. There is more depth to a physical journey. It is about what it means spiritually to the individual. It is an emotional and spiritual journey. It is a journey from the heart showing love for God. The definition of true is ‘loyal’ so a true pilgrimage is a journey you take to show loyalty to God. To become a pilgrim, the person must leave their home and undertake a sacred journey, which may confirm and strengthen their personal beliefs in their religion. People can go on this journey alone or in a community. Many places in the world are very exceptional for Christians. Some are places where Jesus lived, such as Nazareth. Other places are special because a holy person is buried there. Many Christians go on their pilgrimages to Lourdes and Rome. People go on journeys to these special, religious places to order their lives in terms of what is good, beautiful and true. â€Å"Christianity is a journey into Christ a journey that mirrors every Christian mystery through life. As a Christian grows and changes, so he or she tries to move nearer to Christ. A believer’s ultimate hope is to be completely at one with him in eternity, when on the journey, Christians may use the physical act of pilgrimage to help them to focus on the need for spiritual nourishment.† People go to these places of worship as here they believe they can fulfil their beliefs, and show their devotion to their religion. They are making a holy journey. We call those who go on these special journeys ‘pilgrims’. They do not have to do this, there is nothing in the Bible which tells Christians that they must make pilgrimages. It is their decision made freely. Many people regard Lourdes, as a place of miracles and of wonderful and unexplainable events. A young girl called Bernadette had a vision of the Virgin Mary countless times and in these visions, Bernadette, was told how to find a natural spring. Many Christians go as they are ill and hope to be cured. But others go for the same reasons that they go to church. Another reason to go on a pilgrimage is to feel some of the holiness of the place and become closer to God. By becoming closer to God, we can feel like better Christians and this should help us to become better Christians and do as God intended us. People also go on pilgrimage to seek God’s forgiveness for the sins that they have committed. Some people go to ask and receive God’s help, like people who have an illness or are disabled in some way, may ask for a cure to heal them. People can also ask to be healed spiritually, as coming to their pilgrimage centre may make them realise that they have not been leading a good Christian life and it may make them change into good Christians. Rome is another main pilgrimage centres for millions of Catholics. In Rome, there are 7 pilgrim churches founded when the Roman Empire became Christian. People have been coming to Rome on a pilgrimage for the past 1600 years. The Church of St. Peter was built on top of the tomb of St. Peter who was the leader of the 12 apostles and the first ever Pope. St Paul’s church was built on top of the tomb of St. Paul, the great Christian missionary, who wrote most of the epistles in the New Testament. Rome is the home of the Pope and the Vatican is the headquarters of the Catholic Church. A pilgrimage to Rome is very special as it is the home of the Roman Catholic Church. Lourdes is a Pilgrimage centre which is much more recent, but it still receives over 2 million pilgrims a year. Water is a very special part of Lourdes a here there are the baths where you are fully immersed in Holy Water. You feel as if you are being cleansed of your sins, like a believer’s baptism as you are fully immersed in water like Jesus was fully immersed in the water of the river in Jordan when he was baptised by John the Baptist. Question 2 Many Christians believe that it is very important to go on a pilgrimage as it helps them develop into better Christians. As they go to the special, religious centres they become closer to God and begin to understand the religion more. By praying to God they become much closer, and their beliefs about the religion are greatly strengthened. The pilgrimage centres really have a great affect on the person spiritually. By getting away from their normal lives Christians who go on pilgrimages to Lourdes or Rome are filled with a special feeling of belonging when they go to a pilgrimage centre. At these special places Christians feel much closer to God as they are at special places where religious events have occurred in the past. Some people go on pilgrimages as groups, where they can help others who are less fortunate than themselves. Certain groups take children who aren’t so fortunate on pilgrimages to places like Lourdes and let them become closer to God. By doing this they are helping Jesus, as Jesus said â€Å"anything you do to your neighbour you do unto me†. People who may have turned away from the religion could also have their spirits renewed and change as a person to being a good Christian. Some people also feel that they can see their vocation when they come to a pilgrimage centre, which shows the huge affect that pilgrimage centres have on people. When people come on pilgrimages they leave homes behind and decide to forget all comforts and put God first. They are showing by going to these pilgrimage centres, their devotion to God and that their main aim in life is to be a good Christian rather than make money and have fun. They show that their main aim is on God and making God happy. Christians also come to Lourdes and Rome to ask questions, to ask questions about Christianity and how they can become a better Christian and make God happy. Christians also enjoy coming together and going on pilgrimages as then they are surrounded by many people who are like them, all on a journey to strengthen their religious beliefs and become better Christians. Christians also come to pilgrimage centres as they wish to ask God for his forgiveness for all there sins, and by coming on a long journey to a pilgrimage centre they can show to God that they truly are sorry for their sins and that they want to be better Christians. They can also show that God is most important to them as they are coming on a journey to show their devotion to him. The spring St. Bernadette had found was holy and had great healing powers. Now many people visit Lourdes and drink or bathe in the holy water. Many people have miraculously been cured of illness after visiting Lourdes. In Lourdes there have been many specialised things made to accommodate people suffering illness or those who have disability. The people who a go there to pray for themselves and to pray for others. Some pilgrims, who go there, volunteer their time when they are not praying to people who are less able than them. I have been to Lourdes myself and when I was there the feeling of Holiness was unbelievable. Just being there made me feel as If I was cleansed of all my sins, and I truly felt closer to God and being their strengthened my passion towards my religious beliefs. Question 3 After being to Lourdes myself I feel that the pilgrimage centre has become too commercialised. So many people are trying to make money out of the religiously spectacular area it has taken some of the special feeling away from visiting Lourdes. The point of going on a pilgrimage is to get away from our normal lives where all we think about is work and money and spend time concentrating on God and putting our religion first. By setting up shops around the area we are tempted to purchase items, which takes away the precious feelings of visiting Lourdes. The area around Lourdes is meant to be tranquil and peaceful and reflect the image of Christianity, but having loads of shops around the area provokes the town to turn into a busy, messy area where crime can increase and there is a lot of disrespect for the holiness of the pilgrimage centre. However, if a person does visit such a spiritually healing place like Lourdes naturally they would like to be able to take home with them a souvenir to remind them of their time in the area which changed them so much into a better Christian. Many people purchase items which are very special and can be used as aids to prayer, which makes them better Christians as this would bring them closer to God. If these special items do bring them closer to God then they are sacred items and are very precious. When I went to Lourdes I did purchase special items from shops in the area which I have used as aids to prayer and have in my house looking over me, protecting me. But I still feel that the area around Lourdes has become to commercialised as there are so many shops and some of the items sold in the shops are not very sacred and can bring down the preciousness of Mary and Jesus as they are not very respectful.
